Chayei Sarah – Life of Sarah
Torah: Genesis 23:1-25:18
Haftarah: 1 Kings 1:1-31
Apostolic: Matt. 11-12
In our culture we teach that a person should marry whoever they fall in love with.
What if you fall in love with the wrong person?  What if you fall in love with the
wrong person many times?  Falling in love is a terrible criteria upon which to base
a marriage.  In our sidra today it would be easy for Isaac to fall in love with any
number of Canaanite women, but Abraham would not allow it.  He had clear and
specific expectations around Isaac’s potential wife.

Abraham’s servant Eliezer was sent by Abraham back to his people to find a wife
for Isaac.  He prayed that G-d would give him success in this mission.  G-d
miraculously singled out Rebekah.  If we will pray and ask G-d, He will appoint
your spouse.  G-d has ordained your perfect match if you will but wait for Him to
show you, and not take matters into your own hands.  G-d is faithful to give you a
spouse that will compliment you, be a strength to your areas of weakness and
stand beside you as a loyal friend and companion.

G-d isn’t in the dating game, or the living together let’s pretend we are married
game, or the multiple partner’s game.  He is into courtship, commitment and
marriage.  In this you will find His blessing.
