Devarim - Words
Torah: Deuteronomy 1:1-3:22
Haftarah: Isaiah 1:1-27
Gospel: Acts 1-2

The sidra of Devarim is (which means words in Hebrew) always read
on the Shabbat before the 9th of Av, the date on which both Temples
fell. The book of Devarim differs from the other books of the Torah
in that it is being addressed to the generation who were to enter and
conquer the Holy Land. They lacked the spiritual knowledge of their
forebears. They had not seen and witnessed the events of Hashem
with their own eyes. They had only heard of the events which does
not confer certainty. They had to be commanded about self sacrifice
and warned about not obeying the commands of ADONAI.
The words of Torah are to teach and should be regarded as new and
exciting. The Holy Scriptures are living words breathed by Hashem
(G-d). Therefore, it should continue to impart revelation regardless
of how many times a person has read it.
Moshe (Moses) was a teacher and a prophet. He retold the history
of Israel and the instructions of the L-rd to a new generation.
Yeshua, was also a teacher and prophet like Moshe and instructed His
generation. Yeshua taught Torah so naturally that those unfamiliar
with the Torah scarcely realized He was doing it. He quoted the
words of the book of Devarim (Deuteronomy) more than any of the
other books of the Tanack (Old Covenant). He taught the same Torah
that Moshe received at Sinai. The Holy Scriptures are words of life,
living water springing forth. Therefore, we also must read and study
to show ourselves approved unto the L-rd. We must prepare
ourselves and the world around us so Mashiach (Messiah) can return.
