Vayeira – And He Appeared
Torah: Gen. 18:1-22:24
Haftarah: II Kings 4:1-37
Apostolic: Matt. 8-10
A life of faith is a life of testing.  In today’s siddra we learn about Abraham and
his life of faith.  When G-d first called Abram He told him to go forth from his
country.  To leave his family and to go where G-d sent him.  This was Abram’s
first test.  In Genesis 22:2 we see one of the biggest tests faced by Abraham.  G-
d commands Abraham to take Isaac to the land of Moriah and offer him as a
burnt offering.  Mt. Moriah is the mountain upon which King Solomon built the
Holy Temple.  Abraham in faith built his altar on the future site of the Temple.
Abraham did not question what G-d commanded.  He followed G-d’s instruction
in faith and past the test.  Receiving Isaac back while G-d provided a ram for
the burnt offering.  Abraham demonstrated his confidence in G-d.  He believed
G-d with such an absolute faith that he did not hesitate to obey.  Abraham in
relationship with G-d knew the promises that G-d had made to him, to bless and
multiply his seed through Isaac.  He knew G-d would keep his promises even if
this required raising Isaac from the dead.

At every turn in our daily lives we are tested.  This requires a resolute
confidence in G-d and His steadfast faithfulness.  It requires obedience on our
part.  Life’s problems are opportunities to prove our faith, to test our metal and
improve our faithfulness.  Walk in G-d’s ways, do righteousness and justice,
spread the Gospel, and you will see that there is nothing too difficult for G-d.
When G-d gives us commandments, He is not simply giving us orders, He is
giving us power.  His commandments bind us to Him, and this makes a change
within us.
