In-Depth Study of The Book of Revelation Chapter 19 By Rabbi Esther Boucher
|
Chapter 19 comes to us in 3 parts.
Verse 1 - 6 = The Four Alleluias
Verse 7 - 10 = The Marriage of the Lamb
Verse 11-21 = Armageddon
Verse 1 & 2 (Judgement)
After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven,
saying, “Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to
the Lord our God! 2 For true and righteous are His judgments,
because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with
her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants
shed by her.”
The first alleluia is shouted in praise of the L-rd because He has now at last
judged and destroyed the Apostate Harlot Church, whose false teachings
have corrupted the people of the earth. G-d is further praised because He
has avenged His martyred servants whom the false church murdered.
Verse 3 (Judgement)
Again they said, “Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!”
The second alleluia is shouted and we are told of the smoke of the harlot
church's burning rising forever and ever. The church in the new Testament
refers to a body of called out believers and does not refer to buildings. This
points to the everlasting destiny of the lost souls who comprised the false
church.
Verse 4 & 5
And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and
worshiped God who sat on the throne, saying, “Amen! Alleluia!” 5
Then a voice came from the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all you
His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!”
Now the 24 elders and 4 living creatures who continually glorify G-d around
the throne room together worship G-d and give their alleluia. This is the 3rd.
Verse 6
And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of
many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying,
“Alleluia! For the[d] Lord God Omnipotent reigns!
A great voice ushers forth the 4th alleluia because the L-rd G-d, the
Omnipotent (all powerful) has reigned. Let no one belittle G-d's infinite love
and mercy; there comes a time when the holiness of G-d demands that the
unrepentant be judged.
Verse 7 (Promise)
Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the
Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”
The marriage of the Lab speaks of an eternal union between Jesus and the
Christian Church. This fits the facts as we know them. The church,
composed of believers is not yet fully united with Christ. Although there is a
true sense in which He abides with us today on earth; yet in another sense
He is in heaven and many of us are still here on earth separated from his
physical presence. Believers who have died are forever with the L-rd (2 Cor.
5:6-8). At the rapture of the church all the believers who are alive and remain
will be taken up to be forever with Christ. I Thess. 4:15. Thus 19:1-6 sees
rejoicing with the destruction of the rival of the Bridge. The false church is
destroyed and the commercial and political Babylon. From now on the
raptured church in Heaven is called the Bride for the marriage of the lamb is
coming near.
Verse 8 (Promise)
And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright,
for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
Believers are declared righteous, although they once were sinners.
Verse 9 (Promise)
Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the
marriage supper of the Lamb!’” And he said to me, “These are the true
sayings of God.”
Salvation and eternally remaining in the presence of G-d is pictured as a
great supper in the parables of Matt. 22:1-14 and Luke 14:15-24. This fits
the passage at hand.
Verse 10
And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you
do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who
have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of
Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
No good angel will accept worship. These uniformly point the glory to G-d
and they direct that only He is to be worshipped. Satan however fallen arch-
angel desires to be worshipped as G-d.
Verse 11 & 12 (Judgement)
Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who
sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He
judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on
His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew
except Himself.
The person astride this horse is Christ coming now at the end of the 7 year
Tribulation. He is coming to judge and make war. The Christ some
churches preach is non-existent. They tell us of a Christ who forgives and
who will forgive everyone in the world with no exceptions because he is so
loving. His crowns of triumph, glory and deity and His all seeing flaming
eyes show Christ to be G-d coming to judge the world in holiness.
Verse 13
He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called
The Word of God.
His clothes were made red by his own blood which He shed for us who
believer when He died for us by crucifixion upon the cross. Just as the
spoken word is the outward manifestation of the unseen Spirit which dwells
within the body of a man, so is Jesus the outward manifestation of the
unseen G-d, the Living Word.
Verse 14
And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean,[f]
followed Him on white horses.
Here the believers of the ages having been gathered together into one group
of the rapture come with Christ dressed in those white robes of declared
righteousness which He alone can give to the sinner.
Verse 15
Now out of His mouth goes a sharp[g] sword, that with it He should
strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He
Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty
God.
After Armageddon during the 1000 year millennial period described in
Revelation 20 & Isaiah 11 Christ's rule will be so absolute and authoritative
that it is placed before our eyes as an iron rule.
Can you imagine the awesome power that will dumbfound those on earth.
Suddenly perhaps while watching TV they see a strange phenomena, they
hear rumblings in the heavens. A majestic figure on a white horse is
apparent and behind him a vast and numberless throng all on white horses.
We are told this is not an army but armies. Perhaps, more than just the
raptured saints, perhaps even the legions of angels are included. Imagine
the shock as people of earth look up and see millions upon millions of
Christians converging on them from the sky all riding on white horses.
Verse 16
And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:
Jesus is the rider. Let us rejoice Christ is coming again in power and glory
to rule the earth as King of Kings and L-rd of L-rds.
Verse 17 & 18
Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud
voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, “Come and
gather together for the supper of the great God, 18 that you may eat
the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the
flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all
people, free and slave, both small and great.”
Here an angel with the sun as his background invites the birds of the sky to
the supper of the great G-d. In verse 9 we read of the marriage supper of
the lamb which is different. At the supper of the lamb Christians will partake
of a feast with Jesus. The supper of the great god is a supper of death to
which the followers of Antichrist will attend. Their bodies shall lie upon the
ground lifeless to be picked at by the crows, hawks and vultures.
Verse 19
And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered
together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against
His army.
The book of Revelation teaches that the Antichrist, the Beast and his end
time ten kings, along with the armies from all the world, come to the
Armageddon region of Palestine at the end of the Tribulation Period.
Zechariah 12-14, Matt 24 and Rev. 12 show that part of the purpose of this
march to Armageddon will be a satanic final effort to annihilate the remnant
of Israel as well as those gentiles who are turning and have turned to Christs
during the Tribulation.
Verse 20
Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who
worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who
received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image.
These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
The Antichrist or beast and the False Prophet are thrown directly into the
Lake of Fire; they are not merely slain as are the multitudes which follow
them. Their followers are cast into hades - the unseen world of the dead to
await their final judgement.
Verse 21
And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the
mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with
their flesh.
Here we see the armies of the Antichrist as a remnant unto death. They are
slaughtered by Christ at His coming. Which remnant are you headed for?
