In-Depth Study of
The Book of Revelation
Explanation of Terms
A - F
Abomination Of Desolation - A desecration of the temple by Antichrist.  His final
attempt to force the Jews to worship him. (Daniel 9:27; Matthew 24:15;  2

Antichrist - A name taken from I and II John.  In Daniel he is referred to as the
little horn and the vile person; In II Thessalonians as the Son of Perdition; and in
Revelation as the Beast out of the sea.
Satan so completely possesses this man as to amount almost to an incarnation.
Scriptures appear to indicate that he, as Judas Iscariot, will become indwelt by
Satan.
Antichrist will oppose Christ, the saints, and the Jews.  He will be first hailed as a
Man of Peace and given unlimited power by the European countries, the United
States and Israel.  At his rise, Antichrist will be only a man, but with satanic
power.  His sudden, sensational rise as the saviour of a world threatened by
destruction will mark the beginning of the Time of the End.
His later attempt to annihilate the Jews will bring about his defeat at Jerusalem
by the return of Christ.  All prophecy up to the return of Christ will be fulfilled in
his day.

Apocalypse - Apocalypse comes from the identical Greek word, apokalipsis,
which is apo, "from" and kaplipsis, "that which is hidden."  Hence it means
"Revelation," and it is so used as the first word in the book of the same name, that
is, in the Book of Revelation, also called, The Apocalypse (Revelation 1:1).

Born Again - When Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, asked how he could enter
Heaven, Jesus answered, "...Except a man be born again, he cannot see the
kingdom of G-d" (John 3:3)
The condition of this new birth is faith in Christ crucified (See John 3:14, 15 and
Galations 3:24).
Through the new birth (being born again) the believer becomes a partaker of the
divine nature and of the life of Christ Himself (Galations 2:20).
The term "born again" and "saved are used synonymously.  For further light on
this, read the definition for SAVED and also THE SAINTS.

Catholic - From the Greek katholikos, meaning "general, universal, everywhere."
This word appears no where in the greek New Testament except as a title before
the book of James in Eusebius' Bible (4th century).  Here it reads, "Epistles
Catholic," and denotes the NT letters addressed not to any one church or person,
but to all Christians universally.  In the early church this term denoted the
generally held orthodox trinitarian faith as distinguished from the heresies and
cults which had arisen.  The "Modern Catholic Church" is well dated from Gregory
I, the Great, who as Bishop of Rome in 590 A.D. advanced many of the dogmas
which are now incorporated into present day Roman Catholicism - e.g., purgatory,
etc.  Protestantism did not really start with Luther in 1517, but at 1517 under
Luther's impetus there was an attempt to return to the Apostolic faith of the New
Testament.  Protestantism was thus a return to the original historic Christian faith.

Covenant - Covenant is the word for a binding agreement, a treaty, or a pact made
with a solemn oath.  G-d in His grace has made certain Covenants with mankind.
In Genesis 9:8-17 G-d makes a covenant with man not to destroy the world again
by a flood.  The rainbow is given as the token of this covenant.  In Genesis 17:1-14
G-d makes a covenant with Abraham to bless him and his seed and to give them
Canaan (Palestine).  Circumcision was given as the sign of this covenant.   The Law
given to Moses at Sinai was G-d's covenant with Israel (Exodus 24:7-8), and the
Ark which held the two tablets of the Law was called the Ark of the Covenant
(Numbers 10:33).  G-d promised in Jeremiah 31:34 to make a New Covenant with
Israel someday.  Christ's death inaugurated this New Covenant (Testament) sealed
with His blood (I Corinthians 11:25).

Day of the L-rd - Day of the L-rd, DAY OF G-D, DAY OF RETRIBUTION are
kindred expressions which denote time periods in which G-d will be supreme,
destroy and judge the wicked, and reward them for their wickedness.  Paul in I
Thessalonians 5:2 speaks of the Day of the L-rd as the coming 7 year awful
Tribulation period when g-d, before the Millennium begins, will pour out His
wrath on a world which is following the Antichrist.  Peter in II Peter 3:10 uses this
same expression referring to the final destruction of the earth prior to the
formation of the new earth.  Jeremiah 46:10, however, uses the expression "the
Day of the L-rd G-d of Hosts" to refer to G-d's destroying Pharaoh Necho's army
which took place in 605 B.C.

Diaspora - Gk. diaspora, "that which has been scattered; dispersion."  This refers
to the Jews who were scattered over Europe and Asia by Assyria (721 B.C.),
Babylon (606-535 B.C.), and Rome (70 A.D.).  These lost their tribal lands but not
their Israelite identity (Jn. 7:35).  The term can also refer to scattered Christians
(Jas. 1:1;  1 Pet. 1:1).  Someday the "diaspora" shall be ended (Jer. 23:7-8).

Eschatology - Eschatology is from the Greek word eschatos, "last," and logos,
"word; knowledge," hence it refers to Knowledge of the Last Things - the study of
the prophecies which tell of the future consummation of this world.

The False Prophet - Antichrist will be the political ruler who will work the works
of Satan.  The False Prophet will be the religious ruler who will under-gird the
work of the Antichrist.  Both get their power from Satan.
The False Prophet never will attempt to promote himself.  He will never
become an object of worship.  He will do the work of a prophet in that he directs
attention away from himself to one whom he says has the right to be worshipped
(the Antichrist).
The False Prophet will imitate many miracles of G-d.  He will cause fire to
come down from heaven imitating the miracles of Elijah in order to convince the
nation Israel that he (The False Prophet) is the Elijah whom Malachi promised was
yet to come!  Having achieved this deception the False Prophet will declare that
since this miracle (bringing fire from heaven) shows that he is Elijah...then,
therefore, the Antichrist is truly Christ and should be worshipped.
He will also build a statue, and through some satanic or technological miracle
cause this statue (image) to talk and somehow come to life.  When the people see
this miracle they will fall down and worship the Antichrist believing him to be
Christ (Revelation 13:11-18).
