EXPRESSIONS OF WORSHIP BY RABBI ESTHER BOUCHER
|
In the scriptures we find many different expressions of praise
and worship. Below is a list of biblical manifestations of
adoration and worship. This is, by no means a complete list,
but rather some of the more basic and common forms of
worship found among Yahweh's historic people of whom we are
a part of in the Messiah.
Singing: Psalm 33:1 "Sing for joy in Yahweh, O you righteous
ones..." The Hebrew word translated here as "sing" is
ranan. It literally means to "cry out, shout for joy." This term is
used to describe the joy of Israel at Yahweh's saving acts
throughout the Tanakh.
Shouting: Psalm 95: 1 & 2 "...Let us shout joyfully to the
rock of our Salvation... Let us shout joyfully to Him with Psalms."
Lifting up hands: Psalm 63:4 "So I will bless Thee as
long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Thy Name." This is an
expression of deep gratitude and a desire for intimacy.
Clapping hands: Psalm 47:1 " O clap your hands, all
peoples..." This is a manifestation of intense joy related to
Yahweh's victorious reign in our community and lives.
Dancing: Psalm 149:3 "Let them praise His name with
dancing..." This word contains the idea of whirling around in
circular movements and may also include those emotions and
attitudes associated with the movements. It's a manifestation of
the joy and celebration found in the Messiah and the future age
of blessing.
Kneeling: Psalm 95:6 "Come let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before Yahweh our Maker." Sometimes kneeling is
associated with the receiving of a blessing. It is a posture of
humility and adoration.
