Lech Lecha = Go Out
Torah - Gen.esis 123:1- 17:27
Haftarah - Isaiah 40:27-41:16
Apostolic - Matthew 5-7
The L-rd blessed Abraham and Lot his nephew with large herds and
flocks of animals.  In Israel water is very limited.  Their herdsmen
quarreled over grazing territory and water rights.  Uncle and nephew
were finding it impossible to stay together.

While Abraham certainly had seniority and authority over Lot, he
graciously allowed Lot to choose what territory he wanted.  Abraham
would then take what was left.  Now mind you, Abraham, could have
sent Lot back to Haran or he could have assigned Lot land.  Abraham
followed the precept we find in Philippians 2:3-4, "Do nothing from
selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one
another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for
your own personal interests, but also for the interest of others."

Today, we don't find too many persons who demonstrate this.  Everyone
is usually looking out for number one, themselves.  This is human nature
and not goldy nature.  By giving his nephew, Lot, first choice of the
land, Abraham demonstrated humility and love.  A role model we should
follow.  Abraham moved closer to his destiny which is the service of
G-d.  What appeared on the surface to be a decline, Lot got the better
portion of land, was part of the continuous process of transformation as
Abrham dedicated his actions to G-d's will.
