Parsha - Balak
Torah Reading: Numbers 22:2-25:9
Haftarah: Micah 5:6-6:8 Gospel:John 13-14
Balaam attempted to place a curse on the children of Israel three times at
the instruction of King Balak. Instead of curses, Balaam involuntarily spoke
prohetic oracles of blessing over Israel. These oracles of Balaam point us
to the coming of Messiah.
In Numbers 23:21 Balaam states, "The shout of the King is among them."
The Hebrew word for shout is "teruah". This is te same word to describe a
blast on the shofar. In the Targum Pseudo-Yonaton this verse is translated,
"The Word of the L-rd their G-d is their help, and the trumpets of the King
Messiah resound among them."
Each time we blow the shofar on the Feast of Trumpets which is Rosh
HaShanah we reherse the day of Messiah's coming. I Thessalonians 4:16
says, "The L-rd Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the
voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of G-d."
