Parshat Naso
Torah - Numbers 4:21-7:89
Gospel : John 3 and 4
Haftarah - Judges 13:2-25
Our Sidra includes the details of procedures which an adulteress
woman, called a Sotah had to pass in the event there were no
witnesses. We see resting on the traditional image there is a
relationship between the Jewish people and G-d as one of marriage,
and hence sees sin as a kind of infidelity.
There is a statement in the Talmud that a person does not commit a
transgression unless the spirit of folly enters him. We are all born
with sin natures. It is a choice we make on a moment to moment
basis. Will we choose to do wrong, and suffer the consequences?
Adultery in the Scriptures is a grave sin, carrying the death penalty.
There could be no grounds for choosing to do an act with such
consequences, and yet many do. It is foolish to turn your back on
G-d, it is an act of folly. While today, we do not stone people for
adultery or make them drink a bitter drink to prove their guilt or
innocence, there are consequences for this sin. There is a death
spiritually to the marriage, a breaking down of the foundation of
trust between two people. It gives birth to anger, betrayal,
resentment, jealousy, even hatred. It also separates you from your
relationship with G-d. We are the Bride of Messiah. Sin brings a
serving of the link between man and G-d. Sin is an act of infidelity
intervening in the marriage between G-d and His bride. But praise
G-d that no one is ever so distant from G-d that he cannot return
through repentance, and be presented as untainted and pure, a
spotless Bride, because of the completed works of Yeshua on the
cross.
