| A delicious custom of Shavuot is the serving of dairy foods. Blintzes, sour cream, cheese cakes, herring in cream sauce, macaroni and cheese, and vegetable lasagna are all favorites. Some communities serve dairy foods only on the first day of Shavuot, others make it a complete dairy holiday. One explanation for this custom is the commemoration of Israel being a land flowing with milk and honey. Another reason is that when the Jews first received the Ten Commandments on Shavuot, they were not yet well versed in the laws of Shechitah which is Kosher slaughtering, so they ate only diary foods.
