Why do we still observe the ninth of Av as a day of mourning, some 38 years after the
liberation of the site of the Holy Temple?
The miracle of 1967 caught the Jewish nation off guard and unprepared. They were
spiritually, emotionally and practically unprepared in the knowledge of where and how
to rebuild the Holy Temple. The chapters in the Torah containing the necessary
information had gone unread. The 2000 year exile had taken its toll. Yearning turned
to fear: the secular zionist political leadership feared the responsibility of being
sovereign over the Temple Mount. They feared Arab/Moslem reaction of renewed
Jewish presence on the Mount. Rabbis, men of knowledge, pleaded ignorance. That
ignorance locked the gate and drew a curtain over the Temple Mount for the Jew.
Today more and more Jews are desiring the rebuilding of the Temple but are forbidden
on the Temple Mount. They cannot show any outward acts of prayer, talk of any
change is the status quo is forbidden or met with hostility. A movement of Jews is
growing and they believe that the fast days of our times are the very last fast days to
be. They believe they have been entrusted with the responsibility to see the Temple
rebuilt. They are choosing to close ranks and unite by G-d's leading to make this thing
happen. But, until that happens we observe the 9th of Av as tradition has taught us.
