The L-rd commands Israel to remember the Sabbath. In Semitic cultures, the word
"remember" has very clear covenant connotations. So the act of remembering is
an act of faithfulness to the covenant. G-d is a faithful G-d and remembers His
covenants. In this siddra Israel is instructed to show her faithfulness to G-d's
covenant by keeping the Sabbath.
G-d commands us as well to both remember the Sabbath Exodus 20:8 and to
observe teh Sabbath in Deuteronomy 5:12. The Sabbath is to be a day of rest
from Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown. It is a time to enjoy your family,
reflection on G-d's goodness, and rest in G-d's provision. It is a day to study the
Scriptures and spend time with the L-rd.
